What is SCRAWL? +

SCRAWL is an anonymous digital graffiti wall. Anyone can leave a Mark, and others reply with Echoes — no accounts, no names, no algorithms.

What is a Mark? +

A Mark is a top-level post — a message you leave on the wall for anyone to read.

What is an Echo? +

An Echo is a reply to a Mark. Marks gather Echoes over time, like graffiti getting written over.

Do I need an account? +

No. SCRAWL has no accounts, no usernames, and no sign-up. You just write.

Is it really anonymous? +

Yes. SCRAWL lives only as a Tor hidden service, so your IP address is never exposed to the server.

How do I access SCRAWL? +

Open the .onion address in Tor Browser, or scan the QR code with a Tor-aware device.

Why is there no clearnet version? +

Anonymity is the whole point. Running Tor-only means there is no IP logging and no clearnet metadata trail.

Do I need Tor Browser? +

Yes, to reach the .onion address you need Tor Browser or another Tor-capable client.

Is my identity logged anywhere? +

No accounts means nothing ties a Mark to a person. Over Tor, even your network origin is hidden.

Can I delete my Mark? +

There is no per-user delete since there are no users. Admins can soft-delete abusive content.

What happens to old Marks? +

Marks persist on the wall. Echo age is shown relative (e.g. "2h ago"), never as absolute timestamps.

Why are there no timestamps? +

Exact timestamps can help de-anonymise. SCRAWL only shows relative Echo age.

Can I post links? +

You can post text with basic Markdown. Content is sanitised to strip dangerous HTML.

Is Markdown supported? +

Yes, a safe subset of Markdown is rendered, with HTML sanitised to prevent injection.

Can I post images? +

SCRAWL is text-first. Images are not hosted to keep the wall lightweight and safe.

Is there a character limit? +

Yes, Marks and Echoes have a reasonable length cap to keep the wall readable.

How is spam handled? +

SCRAWL rate-limits posting (per Tor circuit) and has spam guards. Admins can soft-delete abuse.

What is the rate limit? +

Posting is limited to a small number of submissions per few minutes to curb flooding.

Can I be banned? +

There are no accounts to ban. Abusive content is soft-deleted by admins instead.

Who moderates SCRAWL? +

A minimal admin can soft-delete clearly abusive or illegal content. Otherwise it is unmoderated.

Is my data encrypted? +

Traffic is encrypted end-to-end by Tor. The wall itself is public by design.

Can others see what I write? +

Yes — everything on the wall is public. Anonymity protects who you are, not what you post.

Does SCRAWL use JavaScript? +

It works with HTMX and has a no-JS fallback, so it functions even with scripts disabled.

Does it work with JS disabled? +

Yes. SCRAWL is built to degrade gracefully to plain HTML forms without JavaScript.

What tech runs SCRAWL? +

FastAPI + SQLite, served behind Nginx, reachable as a Tor hidden service. No Redis, no queues.

Is SCRAWL open about its design? +

Yes — it is deliberately simple: a wall, Marks, Echoes, soft-delete, rate limits. Nothing more.

Can I run my own SCRAWL? +

The design is minimal and self-contained, so a similar wall is straightforward to self-host.

Why the graffiti metaphor? +

Like a real wall, anyone can write, others write back, and the layers build a shared anonymous record.

Is SCRAWL safe to use? +

Over Tor it protects your network identity. As always, do not post anything that identifies you.

Can I report abuse? +

Clearly illegal content is soft-deleted by admins. SCRAWL is intentionally low-moderation otherwise.

Does SCRAWL track me? +

No trackers, no analytics, no cookies for identity. Anonymity is the core promise.

What should I not post? +

Do not post anything illegal, or anything that could de-anonymise you or others.

Is SCRAWL free? +

Yes, SCRAWL is free to use.
